This wine comes from the Kamptal region of Austria, where the slopes are so steep they can barely hold the soil. The Gruner Veltliner grape can only be found in Austria. Pale yellow color, hint of grapefruit and citrus. Beautiful acids, well balanced, mild fruits, very dry. Would go great wth any kind of cheeses, when you mix them together, it just pops! Rating: 5/7 on the Mastro Scale

We received samples of some Austrian wines, and we were pretty excited to share them with you. Additionally, our friend David Speer from Red Slate Wine Company agreed to do the show with us. He had some good information that we wouldn’t have had, and it was fun to share the wines with him too. Thanks to Constance Chamberlain for hooking us up with such great examples of Austrian wine. I looked up some prices online, and ended up thoroughly impressed. We taste the 2009 Zahel Grüner Veltliner Goldberg ~$20, the 2009 Laurenz und Sophie Singing Grüner Veltliner ~$14, the 2009 Domane Wachau Terrassen Federspiel Grüner Veltliner $16, and the 2009 Fritsch Wagram Schlossberg Grüner Veltliner ~$22. tvino.de Der erste Wein, ist ein Weissburgunder vom Top-Produzenten Battenfeld Spanier. Im Gegensatz zu den ersten Pressestimmen, die den Jahrgang 2010 nicht wohlwollend bewerteten, kann dieser glasklare Bio-Weissburgunder mit seiner Mineralität zeigen was im Jahre 2010 in Rheinhessen alles möglich war. Mit sehr viel harter Arbeit wurde hier ein großartiger, schlanker Weißburgunder produziert. Dieser passt großartig zu Spargel. Der zweite Wein kommt aus der österreichischen Top-Lage Frauenweingarten in der Wachau. Er hat typische Pfeffernoten und ist kanckig, jung und frisch. Sicher ein Wein der durch seine leichte Herbe polarisiert. Wir sagen absolut gelungen!

„Nikolaihof“ in the Wachau, built on ancient Roman foundations, takes pride in offering only biologically cultivated wine in their tasting halls. True wine lovers enjoy tasting here. The Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners lie in the vineyard’s cellar. But also wine of the Weissburgunder, Neuburger and Chardonnay grapes. The vineyard’s architecture is mainly Gothic and dates from the 15th century. The Roman look is still apparent in the cellars. The historic winepress is no longer used, but the wooden casks are. The Saahs family, owner of the vineyard, presses the wine without chemical additives and lets the wine mature in oaks casks which contain 2000 and 12000 litres. Most of the casks are made from oak or acacia. The making of the casks is an age-old profession. Nowadays there are not many barrel-makers or coopers left. The tricks of the trade are explained in the wine museum. The former workshop stands as it originally looked. Hardly anything has been changed. Officially designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, this site is to be safeguarded for the future as a testimony to its enduring past. VIDEO WEINPROBE 2006 Viajero Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva Privada, Valle de Rapel, Chile : www.weinpins.de – Herkunft Das Valle de Rapel in Chile liegt innerhalb des Valle Central, südlich der Hauptstadt Santiago de Chile. Die Reben stehen dort in Höhen um 600 Meter. Besonders Rotweinsorten finden ideale Wachstumsbedingungen. Wegen des günstigen Klimas wachsen die Trauben sehr gesund heran. Cabernet Sauvignon ist die am häufigsten angebaute Rotweinsorte in Chile. Unter einer Reserva versteht man in der Regel einen Wein besonderer Qualität, der länger als üblich im Eichenholzfass, dem Barrique, reift. Diese Cabernet Reserva Privada wurde sechs Monate in Barriques aus französischer und amerikanischer Eiche ausgebaut. Charakter: Die Stärke der Rotweine aus Übersee liegt von jeher in ihrer perfekten, fruchtbetonten Art mit sehr schmeichelnden, ausgereiften und eingebundenen Tanninen. Auch dieser Cabernet ist ein solcher Gaumenschmeichler mit verführerischen Vanille- und Würznoten zu Aromen von Brombeeren, eingelegten Pflaumen und Johannisbeeren (Cassis). Hinzu kommen rauchige Nuancen, viel Substanz und ein guter Biss. Sehr typisch für die Sorte und klassisch Übersee so einer muss einfach jedem schmecken! Ein Wein durchaus für gehobene Ansprüche und Anlässe. Genuss-Tipps: Einerseits ein Kaminwein, den man in entspannter Atmosphäre aus dem großen Glas Schluck für Schluck zur Lieblingsmusik genießt. Und andererseits ein Speisenbegleiter für die Sonntagsküche: Lammkeule, Entenbrust …
